Luci e Colori dal Mediterraneo is a young firm based on traditional techniques with the aim to elaborate new expressive models. Luci e Colori Jewels stems from a meticulous research of materials, on the ground of Katia's traditions and background together with the cultural heritage in the Mediterranean area.

Each collections is designed and produced with the utmost care following traditional Mediterranean techniques, such as torchworking, fusing, blowing glass and "satinatura", enrtirely hand made in Italy. The glass is the protagonist in the actual collections transparencies and colours are expressed in simple shapes enriched by gold, cooper and silver leaf or more sofisticated titanium cobalt oxides, like the collections with dichroic glass. The jewels are variegated like the seasons of the year in shapes that express awareness and qualities of those who wear them.

WE WANT TO CELEBRATE THE BEAUTY WITH OUR JEWELS AND TRADING THEM TO COMUNICATE WITH YOU.

THE GLASS - Stone made by man

In many old idiom it is defined as "stone made by man", the story holds it created by chances.

Some travellers merchants, on their way home, back from Egypt, carrying a huge of load soda (Natrum) stopped a night on the bank of the river Belo to rest: Having not found stones to lay their cooking tools, took some sodio carbonate blocks and lighted a fire which kept burning all night long. The following morning they saw, with much astonishment, the "Natrum" and the river sand turned into a transparent and clear substance.

Form the fusion of the silica sand combined with lime (calcium carbonate) assisted also by potassium and sodium carbonates comes up the glass. It coincides with the story about Phoenician sailors and merchants who shed this manifacturing process through the Mediterraneam Sea: Crete, Cyprus, Egypt and above allAnatolia, Palestinian and Syria are the country where we acknowledge

the glass and its formermanufacturing processes. ()

More recently Venetian sailors and merchants learned both making up and method of fusion from sea-peoples elaboratings secrets and customs with a very refinedglass production.

Clearness, colouring, trasparensy and manifacturing are charming components of this substance.

Clearness is by far the among the other elements the feature that make the glass a unique substance synonymous of transparency. Like the water, it allows the light go through without enduring alterations (in fact it keeps the same molecular structure). The clearness quality is that given by the master smelter's skill.

The colouring is one of the most enjoing feelings that can be experienced with glass. It is given by manufacturing procedures, in particular by the reduction or oxidation state of the glass in the still hot furnace and trough the adding of mineral oxides.

Sky-blue, green or dim red glasses are obtained with copper; purple glass come out from manganes; cobalt give as result a deep blue glass. With the improving of manifacturing process, colourings that simulate precious stones and nature-like staining can be otained

Colour perception is a measuring method performed by combining human eye and brain processing when observing spectral light composition; and in the glass this reveals in such surprising manner which brings us back to the origin of slight differences of substance as an evdent symptom of rules determining of both substance and its structure.

Glass becomes a means that vehicles the idea of transparency through the quality of our visual perception as it happens in the eye.

Detains the primacy of the most precious qualities of the species.

Here some fascinating alleged reason that led me to design a collection of jewels with this fantastic material. Not only aesteticism is concerned but also somethin that make us able to estimate the precious qualities of the natural phenomena of which ourselves are privileged organism.

THE POLISHING

It is a technique to render dim a surface.

The polished glass it is also called silk glass or "veluria"glass.

It is obtained through the process of polishing or from the erosive action of the sea. The surface of glass is made translucent by the forming of crystals following thei immersion in a florur bath;

with this technique I have obtained a silk like effect at the touch of the line "Mediterraneo satinati- vetri levigati" that remind us the sea stream and the passing of the time.

INCLUSION

Of other materials glass compatible such us gold, silver and copper gives the chance to obtain special effects. It is the case of the silver leaf rings that show a surprisingeffect craclč, obtained by laying melted glass on to the silver sheet previously laid on another layer of melted glass and the moulded together by the handicraftman.

Thje same same techinique is used with gold, but the effect is different, being gold thinner, lighter and pliable, it spread into the glass creating thin and sparkling grains as stars of dark tones and creates opalescence on pastel nuances and the transparent glass combines it in a redundant glitter.

Working with this in mind and the above mentioned materials I obtained the line " bombč oro argento avventurina".

The adventurina is a very special substance and it seems to have been discovered far before the glass. The formula seems to be mentioned in a cuneiform board and it has been maintained until now: it is composed of parts of pure gold, zinc and copper melted in silica to form a glass mass then cut, grinded or shivered and that gives as a result shining micro grains on both dim and transparent glasses. It shows as solar stone in fact it also known as a stone of the sun.

With this tecnique I have realised the adventurine bombč, "Pastelli" sparklingpendants and "long drops earrings" with impressive look tht can be wear through the year.

Than I discovery from American factory the chance to use the adventurine in blue, in light and dark shinning green, those adventurines are not so different in fact its are again crystals of copper flourished on cobalt (blue adventurine) or chromo (green adventurine). I used those materials for line rings, pendants and earrings "Galassie" and "Maculato Anfora Pendant"

THE WAY I WORK

I try to describe the way I work, my oast.

I travel along the Mediterranean Sea coasts;

travels have always fascinated me and they have brought me far from the daily routine. I have carried my dreams inside me and all along inside the travel itself. I said to myself I was hearing the song of the sea, and that was true. I heard the flowing rhythm of the ripples downstream, the seasons, the moon, the revolutions, the sweet sand beaches, or the highest cliffs, the wind tuning with moulding voices, and me complyingwith my dream of travelling without a goal keeping on dreaming.

There was a pulse around the beings I met and I learned a lot. The light, the villages on the coasts, and the colours both night and day I visited were so intriguing that sometimes I forgot myself diving in deep solitude with no remembrances. I have thrown my senses into the colours of fruits,

into the clothes of the women, the skiesand the boats; into the shinning moonlight, into the flavour of the silence, into people's smiles, into the sound of the sea, into the intense odours of the grass and the savour of the bread.

They all are my melancholy and when I feel far from those places I dig up from my memory the pleasure recorded through senses to forge shapes and colours of my creation-Jewels.

I'm trying hard to keep inside my scheme at least a flicker of the known things, those that unwillingly dwell in our souls, hidden but unextinguished.
